TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Arthur Fils defeated Paris Olympic doubles partner Ugo Humbert 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-3 in a grueling all-French final at the Japan Open tennis tournament Tuesday.
At Tokyo's Ariake Colosseum, Fils, ranked 24th in the world, became the second youngest champion in Japan Open history at 20 years, 3 months.
Jimmy Arias of the United States won in 1982 when he was 18.
Fils picked up his third career ATP Tour singles title and second of the season after battling back from the verge of defeat.
"It was a long match again, three hours," Fils said. "I don't know what to say. It's been a crazy week."
"I was feeling very, very bad after the first set. I was so tired, but very happy to win it."
In the second-set tiebreak, Fils saved a match point with a backhand passing shot down the line and took the set when the 26-year-old Humbert hit a backhand into the net.
Fils went on to earn a decisive break to lead 5-3 in the final set and finished off the match with his 10th ace.
Earlier in the hard-court ATP 500 event, Fils eliminated three seeded players, top seed Taylor Fritz and last year's Japan Open champion Ben Shelton, both of the United States, as well as Denmark's Holger Rune.
In the doubles final played earlier Tuesday, Britain's Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool won a 10-point tiebreak in the third set to beat Uruguay's Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.
