FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Itsuki Oda's 88th-minute goal gave defense-minded Avispa Fukuoka an unlikely 1-0 home win over Nagoya Grampus on Friday in their mid-table J-League first-division clash.
Avispa, the J1's lowest-scoring team, appeared headed for their third consecutive scoreless draw after outwrestling the visitors in front of their goal at Fukuoka's Best Denki Stadium.
Fukuoka's first goal in five games resulted in their first win since June 30.
Grampus' Danish striker, Kasper Junker, missed two golden opportunities to score in the second half. A pair of precise through passes dissected the Avispa backline, but with a defender pulling him by one arm, Junker's shot hit the far post in the 47th minute.
Ten minutes later, Junker beat keeper Takumi Nagaishi in a one-on-one, firing over his head only to hit the crossbar.
With the clock ticking down and the ball in the Grampus area, two defenders tussled with Avispa's Douglas Grolli in front of the goal. When all three tumbled to the turf in a heap, the ball fell to Oda all by himself, and he slammed it home.
"First of all, our plan was to keep a clean sheet and work from there," Oda said. "We haven't won in a long time, and it's been a tough slog for us. I read messages of support from them before the game, and that hardened my resolve to get a result."
