TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Coming off one of the best seasons of his career, Yomiuri Giants right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano said Saturday he has informed the newly crowned Central League champions that he intends to move to Major League Baseball after this season.

"I have conveyed my intent to the team," Sugano said after practice at Tokyo Dome. "I personally desire to play over there."

It will be his second attempt to play abroad. The Giants made him available to MLB teams via the posting system, but the pitcher did not sign a contract and returned to Japan.

Sugano, who will turn 35 on Friday, is a two-time winner of the Eiji Sawamura Award for Japan's most impressive starting pitcher. He went 15-3 this season with a 1.67 ERA after winning 20 games and losing 22 for the Giants from 2021 to 2023.

"My not going in 2020 has been on my mind all this time," Sugano said.
