TOKYO -- Thoroughly locking entry points is key to protecting one's home and oneself, a home security expert told the Mainichi Shimbun amid a string of burglaries in the greater Tokyo area and elsewhere in the country.
"The most important thing is to not let burglars into your home in the first place. It's crucial to securely protect openings such as windows, the front door and the back door," Hiroaki Hamada, a Secom Intelligent Systems Laboratory researcher well-versed in home security explains.
In a series of home invasions and robberies, the common method has been breaking windows to gain entry. Hamada says the area around locks in the house is typically targeted. "It's important to create a situation where even if the lock is turned, there is still another layer of security," he points out. If there is an additional lock at the bottom of the window, people should make sure to use it, and installing a window sash lock can help buy time.
"If the risk of being spotted by neighbors or passersby increases, the intruder might give up and decide not to break in. In the recent robberies, they might still try to enter, but people can at least buy some time (with additional locks). Multiple measures, not just one, are necessary," Hamada said.
So, what should be done if the intruder does manage to break in? Hamada advises, "It's important to quickly notice any unusual activity and respond by setting up sensors that can detect if a window is broken or doors are opened, among other measures."
He added, "If someone breaks into your home, it's generally better not to resist." If escaping outside is difficult, the next step is to flee to a room that can be locked, or a room with an inward-opening door where furniture can be placed to block the entrance.
In any case, it's crucial to "grab a cell phone and retreat to a place where you can quickly call the emergency number," according to Hamada.
