AUXERRE, France (Kyodo) -- Japan attacker Keito Nakamura extended his French Ligue 1 scoring streak to a fifth straight game, but it was not enough to prevent Reims going down 2-1 to Auxerre on Sunday.
With his team trailing 2-0, Nakamura pulled a goal back with a header off a cross from the right by Japan teammate Junya Ito in the 95th minute at Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps in Auxerre.
Nakamura's streak represents the first time a Japanese player has netted in five consecutive games in a major European league.
"I'm really happy," said Nakamura. "It was a pinpoint ball and I just had to connect with it. I have to thank Junya."
Both Nakamura and Ito played the full game for Reims, while Japanese forward Ado Onaiwu came off the bench for Auxerre in the 84th minute.
The 24-year-old Nakamura, who was instrumental in Japan salvaging a 1-1 draw with Australia in World Cup qualifying last week, continues to make big strides among the European-based players bidding for Samurai Blue selection.
"Scoring in this match has given me confidence, and it's thanks to the cross from Junya," he said.
