KAZAN, Russia (Kyodo) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed Wednesday during their first talks in nearly five years that the two countries will explore the settlement of a border dispute to stabilize relations.

Their talks on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia came after New Delhi and Beijing struck an accord earlier this week on patrolling arrangements in the disputed Himalayan border area that marked a key step toward a complete disengagement of troops.

Bilateral relations have been strained since a border clash in June 2020 that led to casualties of troops on both sides.

Modi hailed progress in efforts to resolve the border dispute, stressing the importance of India-China relations that are not only vital for people in the world's two most populous countries but also for "global peace and stability." He agreed with Xi to properly manage differences, according to the Indian government.

Xi said the two countries should "strengthen communication and cooperation, enhance strategic mutual trust" and "set an example in boosting the strength and unity of developing countries and contribute to promoting a multipolar world and greater democracy in international relations," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

The two leaders agreed to restart the stalled talks between their special representatives on the India-China boundary question to ensure peace and tranquility in the disputed area, and find a fair and reasonable settlement, the two governments said.

Modi and Xi last held talks in November 2019 on the fringes of a BRICS summit in Brazil.
