KUALA LUMPUR (Kyodo) -- A bus crashed into a trailer in the western state of Perak in Malaysia on Thursday afternoon, killing one Japanese national, the Japanese Embassy in Malaysia said Friday.

Local media reported that the accident occurred on an expressway heading south near the town of Taiping.

Thirteen people -- 11 Japanese tourists and a local driver and tour guide -- were injured, according to a report from official news agency Bernama. The Japanese tourists consisted of three men and eight women, it said.

An official from the Perak Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement issued Thursday the 13 injured were taken to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital in Perak.

The Japanese embassy in Kuala Lumpur said the Japanese victim died in the hospital.
