OTSU, Japan (Kyodo) -- Rio Takeda won the Japan Classic golf tournament with a birdie on the sixth playoff hole Sunday, outlasting Marina Alex of the United States.
The 21-year-old Takeda won the event co-sanctioned by the Japan and U.S. LPGA tours to earn the right to play in the United States next season.
"I knew I had to make that winning putt since it was going to be the last hole for today (because of darkness)," said Takeda, who has now won eight times in Japan, all in 2024.
"I'm going to the U.S. tour next year, and I hope to experience a lot and get a win."
The long-hitting Takeda eagled the par-5 16th hole and birdied the par-5 18th in regulation to force the playoff at Seta Golf Course in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture.
She carded a 5-under 67 and Alex, a two-time winner on the U.S. tour, shot a 66 in the final round, leaving them tied at 15-under 201, a day after Saturday's round was rained out.
South Korea's Ryu Hae Ran (66) finished alone in third at 14 under. Former world No. 1 player Ariya Jutanugarn (71) of Thailand was in a tie for sixth at 12 under.
