Tokyo stocks open higher on Wall St. gains, US election in focus

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday, boosted by Wall Street gains overnight, with investors focusing on the U.S. presidential election outcome and earnings reports from major automakers including Toyota Motor Corp.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 281.84 points, or 0.73 percent, from Tuesday to 38,756.74. The broader Topix index was up 14.00 points, or 0.53 percent, at 2,678.26.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers included bank, oil and coal product and precision instrument issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 151.43-44 yen compared with 151.56-66 yen in New York and 152.27-28 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0932-0936 and 165.54-61 yen against $1.0924-0934 and 165.62-72 yen in New York and $1.0888-0890 and 165.80-84 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
