BRIGHTON, England (Kyodo) -- Kaoru Mitoma set the stage for Brighton's equalizer on their way to a 2-1 comeback win over defending English Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday.
The Japan winger was instrumental in the 78th-minute goal from substitute Joao Pedro, who scored from close range after Mitoma recovered the ball and found Danny Welbeck directly in front for an attempt that was smothered by a defender.
Pedro's strike canceled out Manchester City's 23rd-minute opener from Erling Haaland. The Brazilian forward also assisted the 83rd-minute winner from Matt O'Riley that condemned Pep Guardiola's men to their fourth successive defeat across all competitions.
Mitoma led the way as Brighton did the bulk of their attacking down the visitors' right flank. The Japanese star had the most touches in the Manchester City box and made the most passes in the final third of any Brighton player, according to BBC Sport's analysis.
Japan teammate Daichi Kamada had a less fruitful Premier League outing for Crystal Palace in their 2-0 loss to visiting Fulham. With his side trailing 1-0, the Samurai Blue playmaker was shown a straight red card in the 76th minute for a horror tackle on Fulham's Kenny Tete.
In the German Bundesliga, Koji Miyoshi netted his maiden goal for VfL Bochum in the 89th minute to secure a last-gasp 1-1 draw with champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Second-half substitute Miyoshi started the movement and eventually got the ball back before squeezing in the equalizer from a tight angle at Bochum's Vonovia Ruhrstadion.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Koki Ogawa scored for the second straight game, bringing his league tally to five goals, as he struck the opener for NEC Nijmegen in a 3-0 win over 10-man RKC Waalwijk.
Countrymen Kodai Sano and Kento Shiogai also took the field for the visiting Nijmegen.
