FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- One crewman is missing and another has been injured after a fire broke out on a Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force ship off the southwestern coast on Sunday, the local coast guard and fire department said.
The MSDF's minesweeper Ukushima, carrying a crew of about 40, reported the engine room fire to the 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Fukuoka Prefecture around 9:50 a.m. when it was sailing some 2.5 kilometers off Oshima island in the prefecture.
Another MSDF minesweeper Toyoshima, which joined the coast guard in the fire-fighting and rescue operation, reported around 2 p.m. that the fire on Ukushima was contained, but a flare-up was confirmed later.
Ukushima's crew evacuated to Toyoshima by around 3:45 p.m., but an engine room crewman, later identified as 33-year-old petty officer 3rd class Tatsunori Koga, has not been found yet, the coast guard and the MSDF said.
The crewman who suffered a non-life-threatening injury was taken to hospital.
Ukushima, which left the MSDF base in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, earlier Sunday, was sailing to Kagoshima Prefecture and conducting a drill.
