TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he will embark Thursday on a trip to Peru for a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and then go to Brazil for the Group of 20 leaders meeting.
During a press conference after his reelection as prime minister on Monday, Ishiba said he wants to hold talks with U.S. President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol while in South America.
He also reiterated his desire to hold an in-person meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at the earliest possible time, without elaborating.
While Trump's return to the White House has raised uncertainty over how the United States would engage in Indo-Pacific, Ishiba said it is necessary to make proposals that "serve the interests of both nations and contribute to the peace and stability" of the region.
"I don't think it should boil down to how much we make concessions or not," he said. "It goes beyond the realm of deal-making."
