FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Ozeki Hoshoryu turned the tables on his opponent with a dramatic throw to remain one of three undefeated wrestlers on Thursday, the fifth day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
Without yokozuna Terunofuji, the champion in January and July, the focus at the 15-day meet at Fukuoka Kokusai Center has been on the ozeki trio of Hoshoryu, Kotozakura and Onosato.
In the day's final bout, Hoshoryu was shoved back to the straw bales from the jump by No. 2 maegashira Wakatakakage (3-2), who had a secure left-handed underarm hold on the back of the ozeki's belt.
Hoshoryu, however, clamped down on that exposed left arm, twisted Wakatakakage around and upended him in a fluid and perfectly coordinated move.
The other two ozeki remained one win off the pace, with Kotozakura shoving out No. 2 Ura (1-4). The unorthodox and improvisational maegashira attacked the larger ozeki head on and was soundly defeated.
New ozeki Onosato bounced back from his lone defeat on Wednesday with a skillful victory against fellow young gun, No. 3 maegashira Atamifuji, who suffered his first loss.
Atamifuji came in hard and grabbed a belt hold as he forced the ozeki backward. But in one swift move, Onosato dislodged his opponent's grasp, seized a belt hold of his own and used that to usher Atamifuji from the ring.
No. 6 Takanosho and No. 15 Onokatsu each defeated fellow rank-and-file maegashira opponents to remain unbeaten.
Onokatsu seized a belt hold on his opening charge and patiently steered and nudged No. 17 Bushozan out to his fifth loss, while Takanosho started strong before surviving a tough bout with Oshoma (1-4), when the No. 4 lost his footing.
Sekiwake and former ozeki Kirishima (0-5) continued to struggle, losing a prolonged slapping and shoving battle with No. 1 maegashira Oho (2-3).
