FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- Ozeki Hoshoryu narrowly escaped defeat against talented No. 3 maegashira Atamifuji to extend his unbeaten start to the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday.
Fellow ozeki Onosato, meanwhile, took his second loss of the 15-day tournament at the hands of former sekiwake Wakatakakage, now fighting as a No. 2 maegashira.
Hoshoryu (6-0) looked set to tumble off the dohyo after being driven to the edge by the hulking Atamifuji (4-2), winner of four of their six previous meetings, but yanked him forward and stayed balanced just long enough for the maegashira to put a toe out first.
The ringside officials discussed the result on top of the raised ring at Fukuoka Kokusai Center before upholding the referee's initial decision in favor of the ozeki.
Only one other wrestler, No. 15 maegashira Onokatsu, remains unbeaten at 6-0 after former sekiwake and current No. 6 maegashira Takanosho dropped to 5-1 with his first loss to No. 8 maegashira Gonoyama (5-1).
In the biggest upset of Day 6, the explosive Wakatakakage (4-2) pushed out May and September champion Onosato after the ascendant star attempted an ill-judged pulldown while going backwards.
"I don't remember exactly what happened, I just planned on moving forward," said Wakatakakage, who is on track for his first sanyaku promotion since returning from major knee surgery. "I'm not thinking about that yet, I'm just taking each day as it comes."
Ozeki Kotozakura remained one win off the pace at 5-1 by pushing out No. 3 maegashira Abi (4-2).
Sekiwake Kirishima (1-5) finally opened his account, snapping a five-bout losing streak with a pulling underarm throw against No. 1 maegashira Hiradoumi (1-5).
Onokatsu beat juryo opponent Kayo and will next face No. 16 maegashira Takerufuji (4-2), who is back in the elite makuuchi division after returning from an ankle injury sustained while winning the March championship as a top-flight debutant.
