TAIPEI (Kyodo) -- Japan completed its unbeaten run in the opening round of the Premier12 baseball tournament Monday with an 11-3 rout of the already eliminated Dominican Republic.
Defending champion Japan topped Group B with a 5-0 record and moves to Tokyo Dome for the four-team Super Round beginning Thursday, which also includes Group B runner-up Taiwan.
The Dominican Republic finished with a disappointing 1-4 record.
On another rainy day at Taipei Tianmu Baseball Stadium, the young Samurai Japan team broke a 2-2 tie to take the lead for good in a three-run fifth inning that included back-to-back RBI singles from Ryoya Kurihara and Shogo Sakakura.
Japan added five runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Six of the Dominican Republic's nine pitchers who took the mound Monday gave up at least one run.
After three days of the Super Round, the final and the third-place game will be played Sunday at Tokyo Dome.
The tournament features the top 12 national baseball teams as determined by the World Baseball Softball Confederation's ranking system at the end of 2023.
Last week, Venezuela and the United States advanced to the Super Round by placing first and second in Group A in Mexico, respectively.
