CHONGQING, China (Kyodo) -- Japan's Mone Chiba topped the women's short program and Shun Sato the men's Friday at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating's Cup of China, the sixth and last event on the circuit this season.
Chiba scored 70.86 points to take a slender 0.02 lead over second-placed Amber Glenn of the United States in Chongqing, where the top five skaters were separated by just 1.78 points.
"With this program, I needed to keep performing with a smile on my face to get a high score. I was able to do the minimum," Chiba said after her expressive performance.
Rion Sumiyoshi was third with 70.48 and Rinka Watanabe fifth with 69.08 as all three Japanese skaters look to come up with a strong free skate on Saturday in a bid to make December's Grand Prix Final in Grenoble, France.
Sato scored 98.75 after a mistake-free performance as he also aims for a men's Grand Prix Final berth. Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan placed second with 93.21 and Adam Siao Him Fa of France third with 91.22
