RUKA, Finland (Kyodo) -- Japanese freestyle skier Ikuma Horishima launched his World Cup moguls title defense with a third-place finish at the season-opening round in Finland on Saturday.
Horishima, the moguls bronze medalist at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, in March became the first Japanese man to win the World Cup moguls season championship.
After squeezing into the final at the Ruka ski resort, the 26-year-old executed a difficult cork 1440 on the way to the podium with a score of 80.51 points.
"Regarding the cork 1440, I'm happy it landed me on the podium, but my goal was to win with this technique, so I want to keep working hard on it," Horishima said.
Canada's "King of Moguls," Mikael Kingsbury, earned his 91st World Cup win with an 83.90-point run, while the reigning Olympic champion, Sweden's Walter Wallberg, placed second with 81.14 points.
The next round of the moguls World Cup is scheduled from Dec. 6 to 7 in Idre, Sweden.
