ABERDEEN, Scotland (Kyodo) -- Reo Hatate struck late with his fourth goal of the season to give Celtic a 1-0 win over closest rivals Aberdeen on Wednesday, extending the reigning champions' lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table to seven points.
The Japan midfielder found the net in the 78th minute, using his chest to control a pass over the top from Greg Taylor before lashing into the far corner.
Celtic had the run of play in the second half at a wet and windy Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen but were frustrated by the conditions and a tough defensive performance by the hosts.
Hatate had one attempt well saved by Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan before eventually beating him with a composed finish.
"It was a difficult game today because of the bad weather," said Hatate, who started for Celtic along with compatriots Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda.
"I score goals for the team, so I think it was (more) important to win the game (than for me to score)."
The result moved Brendan Rodgers' side to 40 points from 14 matches, with arch rivals Rangers 11 points off the pace in third behind Aberdeen.
