TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks rose Thursday morning as sentiment was boosted by Wall Street indexes hitting record highs overnight on confidence in the U.S. economy.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 212.12 points, or 0.54 percent, from Wednesday to 39,488.51. The broader Topix index was up 4.84 points, or 0.18 percent, at 2,745.44.
The U.S. dollar was directionless mostly in the lower 150 yen range as investors adopted a wait-and-see stance before policy decisions by the U.S. and Japanese central banks later this month, dealers said.
At noon, the dollar fetched 150.31-36 yen compared with 150.58-68 yen in New York and 150.39-42 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0519-0521 and 158.11-19 yen against $1.0503-0513 and 158.21-31 yen in New York and $1.0508-0509 and 158.05-09 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
On the equities market, semiconductor-related shares were lifted by solid earnings from some U.S. technology firms driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence. But gains lost momentum as the Nikkei neared the 40,000 threshold last crossed in mid-October.
Investors refrained from making further moves as they waited for clues on possible changes in Japanese and U.S. monetary policies before the upcoming meetings by the Bank of Japan and the Federal Reserve, analysts said.
