SEOUL (Kyodo) -- South Korean prosecutors requested an arrest warrant for former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun on Monday as part of an investigation into his role in a short-lived martial law declaration last week by President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Prosecutors said Kim is suspected of colluding with Yoon to stage a rebellion via Yoon's declaration of martial law, according to the report.
The martial law declaration was in place for just six hours from late Tuesday last week after being quickly rescinded by lawmakers.
Kim has been detained and questioned over the allegations since Sunday. He resigned as defense chief on Thursday to take full responsibility for the situation.
The request for an arrest warrant was made as prosecutors, police and the office that investigates high-ranking officials launched a probe into treason and other charges related to Yoon's martial law declaration that triggered an uproar from the public that is still simmering.
South Korea's Justice Ministry imposed a travel ban on Yoon on Monday following a request earlier in the day from the office in charge of investigations of high-ranking officials.
