Head priest of Kyoto temple wields massive brush to write 2024's kanji of the year: 'gold'

KYOTO -- The Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation announced on Dec. 12 that the kanji character for 2024, which expresses the state of the world through a single character, was "kin," meaning "gold" or "money."
As in the past, Seihan Mori, chief priest of Kyoto's iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple, wrote the character of the year on a large board at the temple in the city's Higashiyama Ward the same day.
