WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to his inauguration ceremony next month, but it remains unclear whether he will attend, a media report said Wednesday.
CBS News, citing multiple sources, said Trump's team is also considering hosting other foreign leaders at the swearing-in event on Jan. 20. It said Trump invited Xi soon after winning the U.S. presidential election, held on Nov. 5.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for having a good relationship with Trump, is considering whether to attend, the CBS report quoted one of the sources as saying.
State Department records dating back to 1874 show that no foreign leader has attended a U.S. president's inauguration, according to the report. In the past, ambassadors and senior officials represented their countries at the transfer-of-power ceremonies.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning declined to comment on Xi's possible attendance at the ceremony, only saying at a Beijing press conference Thursday, "I have nothing to read out at this time."
Trump has pledged to be even harder on China in his second term, surrounding himself with Beijing hawks in his appointments including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to run the State Department and Florida Rep. Mike Waltz as his national security adviser.
Trump has vowed to impose import tariffs of 60 percent or more on all Chinese goods as part of his efforts to create jobs and protect industries in the United States.
He already announced in late November that he would slap an additional 10 percent tariff on goods from China, asserting that Beijing had not fulfilled its promise to institute the death penalty for people caught trafficking fentanyl, the leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States.
In mid-November, Xi and U.S. President Joe Biden held a farewell meeting on the sidelines of an international summit in Peru. During the one-on-one meeting, Xi told Biden that he is ready to work with the incoming Trump administration if it does not treat China as an adversary.
Seemingly directed at Trump, but without naming him, Xi cautioned at the time that China and the United States should "make the wise choice" and "keep exploring the right way."
