BERLIN (Kyodo) -- Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup, while Saudi Arabia will be sole host of the following edition in 2034, football's governing body FIFA announced Wednesday.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino made the announcement following a virtual online congress. The hosting rights were effectively decided last year, with both bids running unopposed.

The 2030 tournament will commemorate the centenary of the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930 by staging one-off matches there and elsewhere in South America, making it the first to be shared between three continental confederations.

The 2034 World Cup will see the event quickly return to the Middle East following the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, with the Japanese men's national team aiming to qualify for the eighth consecutive time.
