TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The 15th Hakuho Cup boys' international sumo tournament will be held Feb. 11 at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan, its organizing committee said Friday.
About 1,100 boys from the age of 5 to third-year junior high school are expected to take part, including children from war-torn Ukraine and the Noto Peninsula region of Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture that was struck by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake on Jan. 1, 2024.
The Miyagino stable run by former yokozuna Hakuho has been closed for the foreseeable future and its wrestlers and elders have been transferred to the Isegahama stable after then 22-year-old protege Hokuseiho was found in February to have physically abused two junior stablemates for more than a year.
Hakuho, now known as sumo elder Miyagino, received the Japan Sumo Association's approval to continue staging the event after the body consulted with Isegahama.
"I've been spending my days reexamining my way of life and seriously facing my mistakes and self-indulgence," Miyagino said. "The stars of the Hakuho Cup are the children."
