YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Japan's WBO bantamweight champion Yoshiki Takei on Wednesday withdrew from his scheduled second title defense in January after suffering an injury in training.
The fight was to be on the same card as undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue's bout against Australia's Sam Goodman on Jan. 24 at Tokyo's Ariake Arena.
Both bouts had originally been scheduled for next Tuesday at the same venue but were postponed last week after Goodman suffered an injury in his final sparring session before leaving for Japan.
The Inoue-Goodman fight will go ahead as currently scheduled.
Takei was to fight Yuttapong Tongdee of Thailand but suffered a cartilage tear in his right shoulder earlier in December that will require about four weeks to heal.
The champion had hoped to go ahead with the bout but apparently gave up on the advice of his doctor.
Hideyuki Ohashi, who runs the Ohashi Boxing gym in Yokohama, where both Inoue and Takei train, said he was hoping to get Takei into the ring against Yuttapong sometime in the spring.
"I apologize for causing this trouble," Takei told a press conference at the gym. "I hope to come back stronger from this."
