Tokyo stocks open slightly higher on firm technology shares

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened slightly higher Tuesday as technology issues tracked overnight gains by their U.S. counterparts.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 31.42 points, or 0.08 percent, from Monday to 39,192.76. The broader Topix index was up 1.37 points, or 0.05 percent, at 2,728.11.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by marine transportation, transportation equipment, and electric power and gas issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 157.17-22 yen compared with 157.11-21 yen in New York and 156.79-80 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0402-0406 and 163.49-60 yen against $1.0400-0410 and 163.47-57 yen in New York and $1.0412-0413 and 163.26-30 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
