BRIGHTON, England (Kyodo) -- Brighton and Hove Albion must deliver a long-overdue victory for their loyal fans, winger Kaoru Mitoma said Friday following a scoreless draw at home to English Premier League opponents Brentford.
The Japan national football team star was in the thick of things as Brighton dominated the contest but could not convert any of their 24 shots during a stalemate that extended the Seagulls' winless streak to six league matches.
Mitoma, who created chances with his accurate crossing and dribbling into the middle, shot just wide of the mark with a thundering left-footed strike as he reacted quickly to a loose ball late in the first half.
"It means nothing at all to say it was close," Mitoma said. "I think the supporters have really endured a lot. We have to repay their faith."
While frustrated at being unable to add to his three league goals this season, Mitoma will have another opportunity Monday when Brighton visit Aston Villa during the Premier League's busy end-of-year schedule.
"We have to use this result as a chance to develop and keep moving forward," he said.
