TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened mixed Monday as markets were weighed down by declines on Wall Street late last week, though the yen's ongoing weakness against the U.S. dollar supported some export-oriented issues.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 105.95 points, or 0.26 percent, from Friday to 40,175.21. The broader Topix index was up 2.47 points, or 0.09 percent, at 2,804.15.
On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by nonferrous metal and machinery issues, while marine transportation and bank issues led gainers.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 157.88-93 yen compared with 157.79-89 yen in New York and 157.81-83 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0429-0432 and 164.65-72 yen against $1.0427-0437 and 164.62-72 yen in New York and $ 1.0421-0423 and 164.46-50 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
