LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Following a year of firsts, including his maiden World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani has made back-to-back championships his biggest goal for 2025.
"One team wins the World Series every year, but only a limited number of teams have done it back-to-back, so it's very hard to achieve," the three-time major league MVP said in a recent online interview. "That's what I want to do most."
The last team to win the World Series in two or more consecutive years was the New York Yankees, who won three in a row through 2000.
In his historic first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani finished with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases as he became the founding member of MLB's 50-50 club.
The two-way star, who was limited to a designated hitter role as he continued to recover from right elbow surgery, also shattered his career highs in many other categories, including batting average (.310) and RBI (130).
While planning to return to the mound in 2025, Ohtani thinks he is starting to reach his peak as a player.
"I'm getting to the age where I have to think about things I don't want to think about," said Ohtani, who will turn 31 in July. "As I train on a daily basis, I'll have to think a bit about the future where my performance will start to decline."
Ohtani has grown accustomed to drawing attention on and off the field. He revealed last week in an Instagram post that he and his wife Mamiko are expecting their first child.
While his exploits on the diamond have fueled baseball's popularity in Japan and abroad, Ohtani has also sought to grow the game by donating tens of thousands of baseball gloves to elementary schools across his native Japan.
"I can contribute to society in a variety of ways, but I think the most important thing is to concentrate on what I do on the field while I'm active," he said.
