TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka pulled out of the ASB Classic final in Auckland, New Zealand, after winning the first set against Denmark's Clara Tauson 6-4 on Sunday.
Japanese compatriot Kei Nishikori, meanwhile, fell short in his bid for a 13th ATP tour crown and first in six years, losing to France's Alexandre Muller 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final of the Hong Kong Open.
The WTA Tour's official website said the 57th-ranked Osaka retired with an abdominal injury, giving No. 50 Tauson her third career title on the tour.
The latest injury puts a question mark on the two-time champion's participation in the Australian Open beginning Jan. 12.
It was Osaka's first final since returning in January 2024 from maternity leave, and she was looking for her first title since the 2021 Australian Open.
Last November, the 27-year-old sat out the Billie Jean King Cup team finals in Spain because of abdominal and lower back injuries.
At Hong Kong's Victoria Park, injury-plagued former world No. 4 Nishikori got off to a fast start in his first final since winning the Brisbane International in January 2019.
The 35-year-old, currently ranked 106th, sealed the first break of the match in the fifth game, then won three consecutive games to take the first set.
But 67th-ranked Muller stepped things up from the second set and was solid from the baseline and at the net, eventually clinching the deciding set with a four-game streak from 2-3.
