TOKYO -- While it is best to avoid driving during heavy snow, there are situations where traveling by car is unavoidable. The Mainichi Shimbun asked the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) for tips on driving in snowy conditions and measures to ensure the safety of drivers and those around them.
According to JAF's Tokyo branch, suddenly changing lanes and slamming on the brakes should be avoided as snow-covered roads can be more slippery than expected. It is essential to equip vehicles with snow tires or chains, and to step on the gas pedal or brakes with plenty of time to spare.
Additionally, snow accumulating on the roof of a car can block the front windshield when one steps on the brakes, potentially obstructing the driver's view. If snow on top of a car falls onto the road, it could lead to accidents involving following vehicles. JAF advises drivers to clear snow from their cars before driving.
A whiteout can occur in cases of severe snow and wind, making it impossible to see even several dozen centimeters ahead, and can cause disorientation in all directions. In such situations, drivers should turn on their hazard lights and pull over to a safe location as quickly as possible.
Caution is necessary even once the car stops. When stopping during snowfall, the snow may block the exhaust pipe, which could lead to carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. Even just clearing snow accumulated around the exhaust pipe can apparently prevent this risk.
If one ends up stranded and the vehicle becomes completely covered in snow, they should ventilate it by sliding a window down about 1 centimeter and turning off the engine while waiting for help. It's also recommended to keep a shovel and a blanket in the car.
People who get stranded should contact the Road Emergency Dial at #9910, call JAF for assistance at #8139, or the 110 emergency number depending on the situation. A JAF representative advised, "During heavy snow, it's best to avoid going out, but be fully prepared if you must drive."
