Yushima Tenmangu shrine in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, known as the "god of studies." Before the entrance exam season, it is busy with visiting students and their families. Many ema wooden plaques offered by students preparing for exams are hung up. The name of the school they want to enroll in or their wishes such as "definitely pass (the exams)" are written on the ema.
