TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Returning yokozuna Terunofuji and promotion-chasing ozeki Kotozakura were beaten Wednesday at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, where ozeki Hoshoryu extended his perfect start to four days to boost his own yokozuna promotion bid.
Back after two tournaments out with chronic knee pain and diabetes symptoms, lone grand champion Terunofuji (2-2) forced Tobizaru (3-1) to the edge, but the No. 2 maegashira wriggled his way back to the middle and launched a patient attack at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Terunofuji, despite his larger frame, lacked his usual tenacity in the face of Tobizaru's pushes and was eventually forced sideways before being pushed out from the back.
Kotozakura (1-3) saw his chance of winning promotion to yokozuna diminish further with his third straight defeat in a lackluster performance against previously winless former ozeki Kirishima (1-3).
The would-be yokozuna's opening charge lacked power against the No. 1 maegashira, who held a firm left overarm belt hold before also securing an underarm hold with his right and soon forced the ozeki out.
After winning 14 bouts as November's Kyushu meet champion, Kotozakura can secure yokozuna promotion with another championship-caliber performance here. But as it stands now, Hoshoryu, who went 13-2 as November's runner-up, appears more likely to earn the big promotion.
Hoshoryu (4-0) faced a stern test from No. 1 maegashira Takanosho (0-4), who stood his ground and forced the lively ozeki back toward the edge. But the former sekiwake rushed his final push and was parried out of the raised ring as Hoshoryu won by thrust down.
In his second meet as an ozeki, Onosato (2-2) fell two wins off the pace after getting pulled down by komusubi Abi (3-1).
No. 3 Oho (4-0) won a battle of the unbeaten after barely keeping himself alive with both feet atop the straw bales before pulling down sekiwake Daieisho (3-1).
No. 5 maegashira Chiyoshoma, 40-year-old No. 10 maegashira Tamawashi and No. 14 maegashira Kinbozan from Kazakhstan kept their records perfect.
