TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Japan Volleyball Association's search for its women's national team head coach has identified Ferhat Akbas, as the top candidate, sources familiar with the matter said Thursday.
The 38-year-old from Turkey would be the first foreign head coach for the team, which has won six Olympic medals including two golds, in 1964 in Tokyo and in 1976 in Montreal.
Incumbent Masayoshi Manabe, under whose control the team exited last summer's Paris Olympics in the pool round, will step down.
Akbas served as a coach under Japan women's head coach Kumi Nakada between 2017-2018 and has since taken charge of the Croatia national team.
He is currently the head coach of Turkish powerhouse Eczacibasi Dynavit.
