TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Tokyo metropolitan assembly election will be held on June 22, with official campaigning beginning on June 13 for its 127 seats, the local government said Wednesday.

The outcome of the poll, regarded as a bellwether for the House of Councillors election expected to take place in late July, could influence the national political landscape, as Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba navigates a minority government.

The ruling coalition, led by Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party, holds a majority in the upper house but shifted to a minority in the more powerful House of Representatives less than a month after he took office on Oct. 1.

The local election commission said it scheduled the voting day well before the current four-year term of Tokyo assembly members expires on July 22, aiming to avoid it being too close to the upper house race.
