YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- The man who guided Naoya "Monster" Inoue to the top of the boxing world is now aiming to help an emerging Japanese prodigy fulfill his potential in the sport.
Hideyuki Ohashi, head of Inoue's Ohashi Gym, recently signed a contract to financially support two-time high school national champion Raito Kataoka and have him train at the gym.
Ohashi has paid close attention to the 18-year-old student of Chiba Prefecture's Narashino High School since he was still in elementary school.
"He might be the greatest genius I've ever seen," Ohashi said. "He has exceptional vision fighting at close quarters. I haven't seen that kind of boxing in a long time."
When Kataoka thought about his next step after high school, Ohashi recommended he first compete at the Olympics rather than turn pro immediately.
Kataoka is known for his all-round skills, including his ability to avoid punches at close range.
With the guidance of his father Kei, the third son of seven siblings took up kick boxing first before converting to boxing in the fourth year of elementary school.
Kataoka became the light flyweight champion in the first year of high school and won the flyweight category two years later.
"I'm confident of winning gold," Kataoka told a press conference in Yokohama on Dec. 9, looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"I want to become a boxer like Naoya Inoue, who inspires hopes and dreams," Kataoka said.
