TOKYO (Kyodo) -- New Japan women's basketball team head coach Corey Gaines vowed Monday to restore "respect" from the world after the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist exited the Paris Games last summer with three defeats in the preliminary round.
The 59-year-old, whose grandmother is Japanese, has been an associate head coach of the men's team under Tom Hovasse since 2022 and helped the team at the 2023 World Cup in Okinawa, as well as last year's Paris Games.
"I think the way the game is played now suits basketball players from Japan well -- speed, pace, space, shooting a three," Corey said at a press conference in Tokyo. "It's everything that Japan women's basketball team brings and everything that we can even do better."
Corey, who was Japan women's advisory coach in 2016-2017, replaced Toru Onzuka on Jan. 10 and already has an outline of how he wants to shape his team toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"I would describe my basketball style as organized chaos...being able to play at a high pace without making mistakes," he said. "(It) is changing the way another team plays their game because they don't know what you're doing."
"I've started looking at younger players already...developing the players is very important."
Gaines played for a few NBA teams, including the New Jersey Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, before managing the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury to a championship in 2009.
