Baseball: Former Hanshin Tigers manager Yoshida dies at 91

OSAKA (Kyodo) -- Former Hanshin Tigers manager Yoshio Yoshida died Monday of a stroke, the baseball club said Tuesday. He was 91.
Yoshida steered the Tigers to their first Japan Series championship in 1985 during the second of his three stints as Hanshin manager.
One of the most talented shortstops in Nippon Professional Baseball history, Yoshida retired in 1969 after having 1,864 hits and 350 stolen bases in his 17-year career, all with the Tigers.
The Kyoto Prefecture native also contributed to the globalization of baseball by managing France's national team. He was affectionately called "Monsieur."
