TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks ended slightly higher Wednesday after see-saw trading, as solid earnings reports and outlooks from major firms lifted key indexes despite pressure from a stronger yen on some exporters.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 33.11 points, or 0.09 percent, from Tuesday at 38,831.48. The broader Topix index finished 7.39 points, or 0.27 percent, higher at 2,745.41.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by marine transportation, transportation equipment and information and communication issues.
The U.S. dollar weakened to the lower 153 yen range in Tokyo, as the yen was bought on growing speculation the Bank of Japan could hike rates sooner than expected after data showed real wages rose in December for a second straight month.
Stocks opened higher as tech shares tracked Wall Street's overnight gains but later lost momentum as the yen's appreciation spurred selling of exporters on concerns it could erode their repatriated profits.
The Nikkei benchmark rebounded in the afternoon as sentiment improved on upbeat earnings from major companies, including Toyota Motor Corp., which raised its full-year net profit forecast, citing a weaker-than-expected yen.
"Corporate earnings have been good, lifting the Nikkei index," said Kazuo Kamitani, strategist at Nomura Securities Co. "But the market appeared top-heavy as traders remained uncertain over the global economy," he added, pointing to concerns over further developments in recent U.S.-China trade tensions.
Meanwhile, Honda Motor jumped 8 percent after a report that Nissan Motor Co. will suspend merger talks with the automaker. Trading of Nissan shares was temporarily halted by the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
