TOKYO -- Japan's professional baseball team the Tokyo Yakult Swallows announced Feb. 19 that the person who performs as the club's popular mascot Tsubakuro had passed away.
The team issued a notice Feb. 6 that Tsubakuro would be taking an extended leave of absence due to health problems.
According to the Yakult Swallows, the performer was a staff member of the team. The club issued a statement expressing its gratitude and respect for the staff member who has made Tsubakuro one of the most beloved mascots among Japan's professional baseball teams.
The statement continued, "We thank you very much for the many warm words of encouragement we have received since the announcement of the mascot's health condition." Tsubakuro will take a hiatus for the time being.
Tsubakuro debuted in 1994 as a swallow character. The mascot became popular for his charming behavior and dark-humored messages he would write on boards instead of talking. The contract renewal also attracted attention in the off-season, and at the end of January this year, the mascot signed on with an annual salary of 60,000 yen (roughly $400) plus an unlimited supply of Yakult 1000 probiotic lactic acid bacteria drink.
