PATTAYA, Thailand (Kyodo) -- Japanese golfer Akie Iwai shot a tournament-low 11-under-par 61 in Sunday's final round of the Honda LPGA Thailand to finish one stroke back from winner Angel Yin of the United States.
The 22-year-old Iwai started the day five strokes behind Yin but could not rein in the American despite sinking 10 birdies and an eagle against a solitary bogey to finish 27-under at the Siam Country Club Old Course in Pattaya.
Yin shot 65 to hold off Iwai and complete her record-breaking performance at 28-under 260, the lowest winning score in the tournament's history.
Iwai sank five birdies on the front nine and tied Yin after three straight birdies from the 10th, but a par on the 13th let the eventual winner retake the lead.
She carded her only bogey of the round on the par-4 17th after failing to hit the green with her second shot. She set the round record with an eagle on the last hole, but the trophy proved a step too far.
"I'm surprised to have produced a score like this, and I also feel the high level of competition with this score not being enough to win the title," Iwai said.
Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul finished third at 21-under, while another pair of local favorites, Patty Tavatanakit and Moriya Jutanugarn, tied for fourth at 19-under.
Rio Takeda was Japan's next-best performer, tying for ninth at 15-under after finishing with a round of 67.
