YOKOHAMA -- A resident of this city in her 20s who recently returned from Thailand was diagnosed with measles, the local government announced Feb. 26.
This is the first confirmed case of a measles infection in the city since 2022 and the first in Kanagawa Prefecture this year.
According to the Yokohama Municipal Government's health and safety division, the woman returned to Japan from Thailand Feb. 9. She had symptoms such as a fever, sore throat and coughing, and was seen by a doctor Feb. 21. She also developed symptoms of a rash, and was diagnosed Feb. 26 with measles by genetic testing. She is still in the hospital, but reportedly recovering. The woman had no history of a measles vaccination.
The woman was using public transportation during a period when she could have transmitted the measles virus to others around her. Details on those dates and times as well as specific transportation are on the city website.
