CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Kyodo) -- Finance chiefs from the Group of 20 advanced and emerging economies on Thursday remained at odds addressing growing concerns over protectionism as the United States' imposition of a series of import tariffs spark retaliation.
The G20 finance ministers and central bank governors failed to issue a joint statement, with South Africa, the chair of the meeting, only voicing concern about the impact of trade wars on the global economy.
The chair "reiterated the commitment to resisting protectionism" in a summary, as the participants wrapped up a two-day meeting in Cape Town.
Downside risks to the global economy, including ongoing conflicts and rising protectionism, "may hinder the achievement of strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive economic growth," the chair said.
