KASHIMA, Japan (Kyodo) -- Kashima Antlers tied the J-League first-division record by going 25 home games unbeaten with a 2-0 win over FC Tokyo on Saturday, while winless two-time reigning champions Vissel Kobe were stunned 1-0 by 10-man Avispa Fukuoka.
FC Tokyo midfielder Maki Kitahara, meantime, set a J1 record with his youngest appearance at 15 years, 7 months, 22 days, rewriting the previous record set in 2004 by former Japan and Catania forward Takayuki Morimoto by more than two months.
After beginning the season with an away defeat, Antlers have since won three straight, all at their Kashima Stadium. They sit second on nine points, a point behind surprise leaders Shonan Bellmare, whose perfect start ended with a 1-1 draw at Yokohama F Marinos.
FC Tokyo edged the first half in a clash between new managers as veteran Japan fullback Yuto Nagatomo saw a goal-bound 25th-minute effort headed clear and attacker Teruhito Nakagawa's left-footed curler from outside the box glanced the post in the 35th minute.
Marcelo Ryan sent his 50th-minute free header against the post before they wasted another huge chance six minutes later despite dispossessing Kashima keeper Tomoki Hayakawa at the edge of the box, with Kota Tawaratsumida dragging his shot wide of the empty goal.
They paid the price as Kashima forward Yuma Suzuki scored a 74th-minute penalty down the middle after he was toppled inside the box, with the attack sparked by right-back Kimito Nono's thunderous volley rattling the bar.
FC Tokyo manager Rikizo Matsuhashi sent on Kitahara in the 83rd minute, and the youngster showed a glimpse of his talent with a superb turn in the middle, but it was Kashima who got the vital next goal as Shu Morooka's backheel from a free kick deflected into the net in the second-half stoppage time.
"We can sense our gradual improvement, and the title will be in our sight by continuing what we're doing," said Suzuki, who has three goals this season under new manager Toru Oniki. "We are focused on winning when playing at home, draws won't cut it. I'm glad we won."
After starting the J1 campaign with three draws, Kobe conceded a 40th-minute own goal at home against Fukuoka -- the only side who had lost all their opening three matches -- and failed to find the equalizer despite playing the last 15 minutes with a man advantage.
Kawasaki Frontale had the chance to go top but instead suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1-0 at home to Kyoto Sanga as former Red Bull Salzburg and Arminia Bielefeld attacker Masaya Okugawa netted the winner.
