TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Ethiopia's Tadese Takele won his first Tokyo Marathon men's title on Sunday, while compatriot Sutume Kebede successfully defended her women's crown.
The 22-year-old Takele ran a personal-best time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, 23 seconds to finish 28 seconds ahead of countryman Deresa Geleta, with Kenya's Vincent Kipkemoi repeating as third-place finisher in 2:04:00.
The top three finishers comprised the leading pack in the latter stages of the race before Takele broke away around the 38-kilometer mark and held off his rivals in a final sprint.
Tsubasa Ichiyama was the first host-nation runner across the finish line near Tokyo Station in the capital's Marunouchi district, placing 10th in 2:06:00.
The race served as a selection event for the Japanese team to contest the world athletics championships to be held in Tokyo this September.
Yohei Ikeda, holder of the second-fastest marathon time by a Japanese runner, was the leader among the local contingent until around 35 km but was eventually overtaken by Ichiyama with roughly 2 km left.
Kebede, 30, ran a time of 2:16:31 to finish ahead of Kenya's Winfridah Moraa, with Hawi Feysa of Ethiopia rounding out the podium.
Yuka Ando was the first Japanese woman, finishing 11th in 2:23:11.
