TOKYO (Kyodo) -- After amassing four gold medals at the Paris Olympics, the Japan women's wrestling team has welcomed two of its former stars into the coaching ranks in a bid to tighten its grip on the sport ahead of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
Kaori Icho, who won a remarkable four straight Olympic gold medals in 63- and 58-kilogram categories through 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, and Hitomi Obara, the 48-kg winner at the 2012 London Games, are offering advice to their juniors on and off the mat.
"I'll be studying my (coaching) method in light of my experience and with overseas opponents in mind," said the 40-year-old Icho, who enthralled observers with her hands-on technique demonstrations during a training camp opened to media in January.
Icho, whose coaching motto is to "be as concise as possible, yet specific," saw her tips quickly put into practice in sparring by the wrestlers who watched her demonstrations.
While raising a child herself, the 44-year-old Obara is aware of how much athletes can benefit from help outside the sporting arena.
"The mental side is important too. I want to keep providing support while maintaining a woman's perspective," said Obara, citing one such example.
"Wearing nail polish wasn't a thing for us during our time, but being stylish is a motivation for current athletes."
Camp participants were not shy about asking questions, including Akari Fujinami, who will look to win her second straight Olympic 57-kg gold in 2028.
"It's really heartening. It's helpful having other women around who are easy to talk to," the 21-year-old said.
