LONDON (Kyodo) -- Daizen Maeda maintained his prolific scoring form Sunday with the opening goal in Celtic's 2-0 win over Hibernian in the Scottish Cup quarterfinals.
The Japanese national football team forward netted for the fourth straight game when he tapped in at close range after Hibernian keeper Jordan Smith stopped an attempt by Nicolas Kuhn in the 39th minute at Celtic Park.
Maeda had further chances but could not find his second before Ireland international Adam Idah sealed the result for the holders with his 92nd-minute goal.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers lavished praised on Maeda, who has bagged 27 goals across all competitions this season, calling him "a brilliant role model for any player."
"He's priceless for us," Rodgers told Celtic TV.
Samurai Blue midfielder Reo Hatate played the full match for Celtic and forced a diving save with his long-range attempt late in the first half.
Elsewhere in Europe, Japanese youngster Kento Shiogai scored his second goal of the season for Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen after coming off the bench in a 3-2 loss to Go Ahead Eagles.
Japan midfielder Hidemasa Morita returned from injury for Portuguese champions Sporting, entering in the 63rd minute of a 3-1 win away to Casa Pia.
