TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya is arranging a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Canada later this week as Tokyo seeks an exemption from President Donald Trump's new tariffs, government sources said Tuesday.
The talks would take place on the sidelines of a three-day Group of Seven foreign ministerial gathering from Wednesday in Charlevoix, Quebec, according to the sources.
The Trump administration is set to impose tariffs of around 25 percent on imported cars, likely in April or later, and on all steel and aluminum imports starting Wednesday, fueling concerns in Japan's affected industries.
On Monday, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yoji Muto sought Japan's exemption from Trump's tariff plan in separate meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington but failed to secure any assurance.
Iwaya told a press conference on Tuesday that Japan will "tenaciously continue to take necessary steps" to fend off the planned duties.
If realized, it would be the third meeting between Iwaya and Rubio, including a brief exchange in Germany in February, since the U.S. secretary took office following Trump's return to the White House for his nonconsecutive second term in January.
