WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- Ukraine on Tuesday expressed readiness to accept a U.S. proposal for a 30-day cease-fire with Russia, according to a joint statement from Washington and Kyiv after a meeting involving senior officials from the two countries in Saudi Arabia.
"Ukraine has agreed to it and hopefully Russia will agree to it," U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House, adding he will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin possibly later this week.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who took part in the meeting over how to end the three-year-old conflict, urged Russia to take action, saying "the ball is now in their court" and "our hope is that the Russians will say yes."
Washington will immediately resume intelligence-sharing and security assistance to Ukraine based on the results of their talks, according to the statement.
It said Ukraine was ready to accept the U.S. proposal, including a cease-fire, "subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by (Russia)."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted positively to the meeting's outcome, saying, "We see it as a positive step and are ready to take it."
"Now, it is up to the United States to convince Russia to do the same. If Russia agrees, the ceasefire will take effect immediately," Zelenskyy said.
U.S. national security adviser Mike Waltz, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, also attended the talks in Jeddah.
Washington and Kyiv held a meeting of senior officials for the first time since a summit between Trump and Zelenskyy collapsed after they, as well as U.S. Vice President JD Vance, exchanged barbs at the White House last month.
The rift led the United States to put on hold a planned deal for Ukrainian rare earths and suspend the sharing of intelligence with Kyiv.
