OSAKA (Kyodo) -- Japanese police are set to arrest a 29-year-old man held by Thai authorities over his alleged involvement in Myanmar-based fraud rings, an investigative source said Monday.
Osaka prefectural police plan to arrest Tomu Fujinuma after he is transferred to Japan from Thailand on or after March 25, suspecting he assaulted an acquaintance with a stun gun inside a car in Osaka last August and confined him, according to the source.
Police believe Fujinuma and the victim were both recruiters for an anonymous and loosely organized criminal group and had a financial dispute.
The police are also expected to investigate whether there is any connection between the Osaka incident and the Myanmar scam center.
About 10,000 foreign nationals were detained at scam centers run by crime syndicates operating online fraud schemes in eastern Myanmar near the Thai border. More than 7,000 were placed in protective custody in January and February.
Japanese high school students from Miyagi and Aichi prefectures were also taken into protective custody by Thai authorities near the border.
